Hello all members, sponsors & patrons

anzac

In another sad week, long time club member Jim Lavender passed away last Thursday.

The article below was read out at the ANZAC Day ceremony last year and is a great reflective story of his early life.

This is the story of a boy who was raised on a farm on the North coast of N.S.W. in a place called Bellingen.

At the age of 15 he left school and started working on farms until he was 17 where in 1937 he joined the Navy as a career.

He entered the training school in Victoria for 9 months and after doing 2 weeks sea time on the destroyer HMAS Vampire, he was then posted to the HMAS Sydney in June 1938. His service on this ship was for 3 and a half years as an ordinary seaman. While on board and during the 2nd World War, the HMAS Sydney took part in a lot of action and bombing in & around the Mediterranean in 1940. By then he was an able seaman & later a gunner. After the ship returned to Australia in 1941, she did escort duties in the Pacific & later the Indian Ocean.

In September 1941 he was posted to a new ship HMAS Rockhampton, when only 8 weeks later he heard the news that HMAS Sydney was sunk off the WA coast with no survivors, including all his mates, as he had spent the last 3 and half years on that ship.

The Rockhampton was in an escorting convoy for merchant ships. He then joined HMAS Nizam a destroyer, where he served a short period and in 1943 was then transferred to the Boom service in Fremantle. There he served 6 months on building a submarine protection Boom from Woodman’s point Fremantle, to join the northern end of Garden Island.

In 1944 he was posted to Darwin in the same type of work for a year. From there he was posted to the HMAS Kalgoorlie in New Guinea and in 1946 the ship returned to Australia. The Dutch Navy took over that ship as it was sold to them.

After 6 months off on shore duties, he was back at sea on the HMAS Karangi, a boom laying ship stationed in Fremantle for the next 3 and half years.

In February 1950 he finished his time in the Navy. The last five years he served as a Cox Swain Petty Officer and also a trainer in gun laying.

His sporting feats in the Navy, was playing Rugby for the Navy Combined Side and he played for Palymra Rugby Club in W.A. He also represented Western Australia 4 times in the Eastern States Competition.

In latter years he’s been an avid and well respected bowler at the Dunsborough Country Club.

Men’s Bowls – Newsletter

Thursday bowls was again well supported with Geoff Benn & Butch Sharpe being the winners. Runners Up were Sid Rogers & Bill Bass & the Consolation prize went to Graham Winter & F. Morgan.

John Tucker (second Vice Captain) is now helping Pete Cracknell with the organisation & his involvement is much appreciated.

Great to note that Pete has been running this event now for 7 years as of last week! Thanks Pete.

Snakes & Ladders Mixed Bowls commenced on Saturday replacing Cash Pairs. Well done Wendell Hoover in getting this event off & running.

28 Bowlers supported the event &, once the bowlers understood the format, the event proved very popular.

Geoff Benn was the winner for the day with Dave Chester a close second.

Players are reminded that, whilst we would appreciate you putting your name on the list before Friday evening, you still need to be present by 12.10pm on the Saturday.

Even if you haven’t put your name on the list you may still play providing you roll up before 12.10pm

As players are ceded for this event, Wendell & Rob need the time from 12.10pm – 12.30pm (starting time) to grade the players.

Tuesday’s Mickey Mouse bowls was a roaring success last week with 18 bowlers taking part. With 23 players the previous week Tuesday Bowls is really becoming very popular.

Some brave club members battled challenging conditions on Sunday to compete in the Dwellingup 40km ride. Well done MTB warriors!

A trail care day was held on Sunday. This was very timely as a clean up was required after the storm. Several trees blocked the trails and were removed. Thanks to Rod Brown, Mike Longman, Ian Lightfoot, Mark Webster, Danielle Clark, Brendan Webster and Chris Parkinson for their great efforts and keeping the trail safe.

Caution signs have been placed at a new log rollover below the berms on Bojangles trail. The tree was too big to move and we now have a new feature. A b-line is planned in the near future. Caution signs have also been placed on the Slalom where one section was flooded adjacent to the school.

Dunsborough Tennis Club members played in the Bunbury Teams Tournament on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th May hosted by the Bunbury Tennis Club.

Mike Howes and John McCallum joined teams from other regions. The Dunsborough ladies formed a team comprising Marlene Howes (Captain), Juliet Olsen, Jan Pendrigh and Jenny Clark. They were joined by Heather Creedon from Esperance.

The tournament was conducted in a series of round robin events with the ladies playing 9 game sets. Both days provided some great tennis with teams from many Perth clubs competing alongside other south west teams. The Dunsborough Ladies team came away as winners of their division and had so much fun they’ve vowed to return next year.

Hello all members, sponsors & patrons

It was a busy ANZAC long weekend around the Club.

Friday night the Club held a dinner dance featuring Local Vintage.  Estelle Perry put in countless hours organising the meal and donations for the night.  It was very well supported by Club members and patrons  A great night of dining and dancing was had by all.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On Saturday after the ANZAC Ceremony around 100 people returned to the Club for the ANZAC Day lunch.  Once again the Golf ladies did a fantastic job organising the meal especially considering they were backing up from the Friday night dinner.  A good crowd remained for the afternoon enjoying a few cold beverages and a game of bowls.

Saturday evening Bill and Helen Marwick celebrated their 50th Wedding Aniversary with family and friends.

Sunday the Club hosted an engagement party for 120 guests.

I must make special comment of the above and beyond effort put in by Leanne and Jye over the weekend behind the bar.  It was an extremely long and busy weekend and without their hard work and dedication it could not have run as well as it did.  Thank you

“News from the Carpet”

The Annual Men’s and Women’s Bowls AGMs were held last week when current issues were discussed and new committees elected. Dennis Frost was elected as the new Mens’ Chairman and Rob Pollard the Mens’ Captain while Daisy Grist and Sue Chester fill the self-same Ladies’ positions.

On Tuesday there were just 12 players of both sexes enjoying the wonderful weather and two hours of fun on ‘B’ carpet. (All men and women are welcome each Tuesday to sign on from 1 pm. for a 1.30 start.)

The Thursday Peg-draw was won by Wendell Hoover and a visitor from Thornlie Bowling Club; runners-up were Ian Creagh and Busselton’s Wally Dawson. Bill Marwick, Clem Taylor and Norm Gage took the consolation, while an elderly Dockers supporter shared the Mars bar !

Following the two games, Rod Grist, the Mens’ Vice-Chairman, presented trophies to Gary Davies, the season’s Singles Champion; to the new member, Kevin Nicholls, the Wrong Bias trophy; and to Johnny Cunneen, the Mars Bar trophy. Rob Pollard accepted the Foster Pearce Trophy as Clubman of the Year. Rod Grist noted that Gary Davies had also won the Leeuwin League Championship Singles and Geoff Benn/Kevin Gibb/Tim Sansom/Butch Sharpe the Fours L.L.Championship title. Earlier in the year those four had been rewarded as Club Fours Champions, as had Clint Kelly and Geoff Benn, the Pairs Champions, and Geoff Benn/Kevin Gibb/Brian Marwick the Triples Champions.

Wendell Hoover will be running the Winter Cash Pairs which will commence on Saturday 9th May.  Arrive at 12.30 pm for a 1.00 pm start.

Pump Track Update

We’ve made some good progress on the pump track, moving a huge amount of gravel around the site and shaping the track. The rain literally stopped us in our tracks due to clay in the gravel.

Our goal is to have the pump track safe and ridable for the Down South Mountain Bike Festival at the start of August. To achieve this we need to make the most of the fine weather.

We’ve struck a few challenges in terms of the size of the job, budget constraints and volunteer availability. The Cycling Club Committee and pump track coordinators are meeting Thursday 23 April to discuss the best way forward.

Hello all members, sponsors & patrons

It was an extremely busy weekend around the Club with X Adventure, Men’s Pennants and the Finals of the Professional Men’s Singles.

I would personally like to thank Leanne for all her effort in the bar, the amazing volunteers in the kitchen and the parking volunteers who all worked extremely hard over the weekend.  The Club profited well financially from the event.   It gives me a great amount of pride to be a part of these events when Club members can come together for a common goal.  We are very lucky to have so many hard working volunteers in our Club.

Great effort everyone.

Croquet

croquet

The profile of croquet is on the rise, and we have many indicating that they would like to learn to play. Wednesday and Friday social croquet have been well supported and a photographer from the Times arrived unannounced last Wednesday. Although the story incorrectly mentioned the Busselton Croquet Club the photos were definitely of our Wednesday group.

 Court Extension:

The second court is coming along well. Some areas are completely covered and there are plenty of runners in other areas. The watering regime has been greatly reduced and the court has been mowed weekly for the last month.

Thank you to Raelene Willis, David Morris and Terry South for all their work. Last Wednesday the court was rolled as well.

Friday Night Social Croquet:

Depending on the weather and light this may only run until Easter. Be there by 5pm for instruction or practise, and then games will be organised until about 6.15. The cost is $3 for members and $5 for social and non members.

 Friday Night Dinners:

We kept up our high standard of presentation for Friday Night meals by once again decorating with a Black Friday scheme. Thank you to our helpers on the night.

Dunsborough X-Adventure 2015

The weekend of March 14 & 15 brought the X-Adventure triathlon to Dunsborough, with the Dunsborough Country Club hosting several thousand competitors and visitors.

Competitors from far and near competed in long course, short course and kids triathlon races over the weekend. Standalone paddle races were held on the Saturday morning. The event was a rip-roaring success in showcasing what Dunsborough has to offer visitors looking for adventure.

The feedback on the course was very positive. Many people mentioned the high quality and variety of the mountain bike course. The Country Club provided excellent facilities for weary muddy competitors to clean up and for spectators seeking shelter and food.

Spectator highlights include the jump into the ocean at Castle Rock during the run leg along with the ramp over ‘the sheep dip’ on the mountain bike course.

The long course, held on Sunday, was a 1.5km ocean swim, 12km coastal trail run and a 22km mountain bike. The short course, held on Saturday, was a 700m ocean swim, 6km coastal trail run and a 12km mountain bike. The kids race included a 200m swim, 6km run and 4km mountain bike.

The weather delivered great conditions for the race, with Sunday morning providing glassy water on the bay for the long course swim. The kids had a great adventure race with the heaviest showers of the weekend falling around 4pm on Saturday as they started the swim.

Dunsborough was well represented with many local men, women and children taking part. Notable results where…

  • Jess Reynolds won the Prime (18-39) female long-course race on Sunday in a time of 3:03:37
  • Balinga Pasco came second in the prime (18-39) male long-course race on Sunday in a time of 2:30:05
  • Rowan Brown won the Prime (18-39) male short-course race on Saturday a time of 1:23:53
  • Johan Poncet, Florie Gibier and Mike Longman won the mixed team short course in 1:39:27
  • Peter (Tank) Matthews won the Vintage (50+) Male short course in 1:43:18

Congratulations to all place getters and participants.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped the event run smoothly and safely. Special thanks to Richard Renn who worked tirelessly to set up the course and Amber Nash who organised the volunteers.

Thanks also to Club Manager Bruce Taylor, volunteers from all all sections of the Country Club, Cape Mountain Bikers and other local sporting organisations and vendors who helped to make the Dunsborough X-Adventure a huge success for the Dunsborough Country Club and broader community.

Mark your calendar for August 1 & 2 for the Down South Mountain Bike Festival.

Twilight MTB Time Trials Summer Series comes to a Finale! next Monday…

The final race (12km Cross Country) will be from 5:30pm on Monday 23 March

Juniors (4km Cross Country) start from 4:30pm

This will be followed by the Twilight MTB TT Summer Series Presentation Night at the clubrooms from 5.30pm on Friday 27 March

Ladies Pennant Final

In what was an extremely close contest, Augusta edged out Dunsborough Blue by two shots with the final bowl of the day to win the final.  After the first game was drawn 15 all, Augusta edged out Dunsborough in the second game 20 to 18.  It was great to see such good numbers of  support for Dunsborough from their fellow bowlers.  The game was followed by a luncheon and presentations.

Corporate Bowls Challenge at Cowaramup

Seven teams represented the DDCC Corporate Bowls on Wednesday March 4th.  Travel was via bus driven by Wendell Hoover with all teams bar one taking this travel opportunity.

Two of the Cowaramup teams did not make it on the night and so a hasty change had to be made to ensure the competition ran.  Thus a few of the games were played 3v4 players.  It meant a slight advantage to the opposition but our boys loudly proclaimed they could handle anything and “bring it on” was the chant.

Lights were set up and the game commenced.  Our lads found the greens there quite trying and so we went down 5-2 games.

Congratulations to Cowaramup who have now won the challenge trophy four times to our nine times, so we cannot complain can we?  Many thanks to Peter Clews and his band of helpers for the venue, the game, the food and their hospitality.  Next years challenge will be at home.

Many thanks and congratulations to the teams which represented the club and who played well throughout the season to get to the challenge.

The next step is now if three of our teams would like to go to the state challenge in Perth.  Information has been sent to the teams concerned.

I would like to thank all sponsors once again for their continued support, to all the volunteers without whom this competition could not run and to all the teams for taking part.  I hope everyone will continue again next year. Please pass the word and help get more teams involved.

Janice Paddick Hoover

A big thank you to Janice & Wendell Hoover for the time and effort you both contributed to the Corporate Bowls season making it a great success.

Bunbury Central Tournament

Over the Labour Day long weekend, Terry Herd and Raelene Willis played in the Bunbury Central Croquet Club’s 100th Birthday Association Croquet Handicap Doubles with a changing partner format competition. This is a relaxed format where each player plays with a different partner in each game. It is a very social occasion as you get to meet and play with players of varying levels and experience.

In her first game, Terry was fortunate to be partnered by Martin Clarke, the second ranked Association Croquet player in WA, who had just returned from Victoria where he had won both the Victorian Open Doubles and Singles Golf Croquet competitions. Both Terry and Raelene enjoyed the weekend.

This year’s tournament had a special significance for Bunbury Central as it is celebrating its 100th birthday. Last Sunday, Terry and Raelene joined Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan, Federal Member for Forrest, Nola Marino and past and present players at the club to mark the occasion.

Friday Night Social Croquet

There will be no social croquet this Friday, March 13th, because of preparations for the X Adventure event.
