PROPOSED LICENCE CHANGE

The Management Committee has initiated proceedings to apply for an alternative liquor licence.

Why—

  • Technically non-members are, in some cases, attending Club functions outside the jurisdiction of our current licence.
  • To be able to openly advertise and attract more visitors to our functions .
  • To be able to attract more visitors and convert them into members and eventually playing members.
  • To continually increase our membership numbers resulting in low membership fees which in itself creates an attraction.
  • To attract people who are looking for an alternative social venue rather than the local Pub or bars.

What Changes At The Club—

Nothing really ! Our Club will continue its current operation with its existing sporting membership but also:

  • Legally be able to provide and advertise functions open to the public.
  • Attract local community and residents.
  • Be promoted as an attractive function venue for weddings, birthdays, corporate affairs, etc.
  • Offer a two tier bar and meal price – Members and non-members.

BOWLS NEWS

Tuesday Mixed Bowls

20 people came along for our last day of bowls on Tuesday and it was another very fun and enjoyable day.

Maureen Hines again bowled extremely well to be first into the finals followed by Toby McCarthy and Ken Littlefair.

In the finals Maureen again was on target and took out first prize comfortably.  Well done Maureen.

The carpet has been ripped up now and the new carpet should be finished on both greens around the 20th October.  Thanks to everyone who participated on Tuesday Mixed Bowls for making it a fun and enjoyable event.  Hope to see you all again next April when we will start it up again.

Thursday Men’s Bowls

Thirty keen competitors turned up on a lovely Spring day, run by faithful Peter Cracknell. Bill Pearce, Wendell Hoover, and Tom Reynolds went home with the meat, having beaten Jimmy Walker, Norm Gage and Tim Sansom comprehensively twice, leaving them with the Mars Bar.

Saturday Mixed Bowls

A Baker’s dozen turned out on Saturday playing three sessions of ten ends. Tim Sansom and Maureen Hines tied for first place with Gary Robinson and Gail Barry coming third and fourth before the rain descended, preventing a final play-off. (Prize money was shared between the two who stayed to receive it!)

Work has commenced, replacing the carpet on ‘A’ green, but Thursday bowls will continue on ‘B’ green with play limited to the first 42 bowlers to turn up

Affiliation fees of $50 are now due.  Please pay your Bowls Section Treasurers

CROQUET NEWS

South  West  A C Pennants begin Thursday 5th October then the following 3 Thursdays finishing on Thursday the 26th.  Start times 8.30 for 9.00. Would all A.C. Players available kindly let me know. Cheers Raelene.

Thursdays Busybee.
Over the last few weeks I had been endeavouring to find a time to set about aerating no 2 court, the problem was , trying to get this action underway following the A.C tournament, and also having this court in reasonable condition for G.C.s singles and doubles, which Captain Caryll is hoping to complete during October, also A.C s  pennants first match is at home on the 5th, therefore the date was set at very short notice, plus the problem escalated when on trying to book the machine for a 8am start I discover somebody else got in first. As you now know we were able to get the machine 2 hours earlier than anticipated which was lucky otherwise we would have been working in the dark.  A huge thank you to following Max, Caryll, Terry, Phil, David B, Maree, Karen, and  Rosie, this group did  a magnificent job as we not only aerated, but also fertilised and topdressed the court, once again my thanks. Something for everyone to think about!!!

October and the Club’s Annual General Meeting is approaching so it is time to think about nominating for a position on the Management Committee.

This year we have five (5) positions to fill therefore we would encourage all Members to consider nominating.  For each of the sporting sections it is important to nominate one of your members for a position so as to have a strong voice in the management as well as a representative for the interests of that sport.

The Club has an important social and community role within Dunsborough.    By becoming a member of the Management Committee one can:

  • contribute to enhancing this service,
  • put your ideas on the table about the running of our Club,
  • hear firsthand what the other sections are planning and contribute your thoughts,
  • get satisfaction from progress and good outcomes, and
  • of course feeling more involved generally.

As always, volunteering in any worthwhile cause gives personal satisfaction to those involved.

Our Club holds a very important place in this community and to all our members.  It needs to be managed in a very professional manner by a cross section of members. Also, a healthy situation exists when these Committee members change over on a regular basis to maintain fresh ideas and energy.

The last two years has seen many new projects put in place, new Bowling Greens, new Tennis courts, upgrade of our Golf course, improvements to the Bike skills course, Croquet is booming, new membership options, new outdoor furniture, the Point of Sale system to better manage the Bar and recently the new Reward Card. Our Club sponsorship is also expanding with a number of new sponsors coming on board.

We envisage the future being as progressive, rewarding and exciting for the Club.  New ideas and energy are very important in achieving this vibrancy.

Please give strong consideration to nominating.  Nomination will be called for during August.

Kaye L McCormick

Secretary

BOWLS NEWS

Tuesday Mixed Bowls

23 players turned up for another fun and enjoyable day.  A couple of different games were played and points were added up for each game to determine who ended up in the final.  Tom Reynolds, Barb Moylan, Judy Henderson and Barb Kerruish ended up playing in the final.  With Tom scoring in the first two ends and keeping the lead to run out a very worthy winner for the day.  Good one Tom and hope to see everyone again next Tuesday which is probably our last game before the old carpet is ripped up and the new carpet installed

Men’s Thursday peg-draw

After two years of constant nagging Dave Chester finally joined forty others for Men’s Bowls on a very pleasant Spring day. And he won the meat !! Sharing first prize with Butch Sharpe, (a prodigious buddy bowler these days.)

The chocolate went to Ken Hill and Jimmy Walker.

Saturday mixed scroungers

The weather was overcast but this did not stop 14 intrepid bowlers playing 4-3-2-1.

Sharon joined her carpet-king husband in the final, together with Maureen Hines and Ian Creagh.

All combatants provided us with four tight ends but Ian’s consistency won the day.

For your attention:-

It looks like the installation of the new carpets will commence next Monday, weather permitting. The supervisor of the process has promised ‘A’ green should be ready a fortnight later, given clear skies, with ‘B’ green to follow.

Male bowlers playing Pennants or Club tournaments will be required to pay the Treasurer, Hans Queckfeld $50, shortly, being the member’s contribution to the club’s affiliation fees to Bowls W.A., to the Leeuwin League, and to the South West Bowling League.

Such affiliated bowlers will continue to be charged $8 for social events while non-affiliates will be asked for an extra $5 (as their contribution to green fees).

CROQUET NEWS

Association Croquet State Division 4 Singles

                        DDCC 9/10th September

Over the weekend Dunsborough Croquet hosted the Croquetwest Association Croquet State Division  4 Singles. 8 players – from Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury and Dunsborough clubs – played 3 two and a half hour Round Robin matches in two blocks on Saturday and 3 two and a half hour Final block Round Robin matches on Sunday – a mammoth undertaking! The winner was Carmel Hodges from Halls Head and the Runner-up David Smeeton also from Halls Head. Dunsborough players David Bell and Max Kewish came sixth and seventh. Well done.

The event could not have gone ahead without the support of the Croquet Section. Thanks to our Greenkeeper Raelene for the time and effort she puts into a difficult task and for her Tea Lady duties on the day,; to Vaile, Manager’s Assistant and Scorer (within minutes of the matches’ finishing the scores were available on the Internet); to the cake makers -Barbara, Helen, Caryll, Glen, Vaile, Maree (who also set the standard for the Presentation Tea). Thanks to all who prepared, set up and cleared the courts. And thanks to the club members who came to watch.

Due to the hard work of many people, the facilities and quality of our club and greens made a great impression on our visitors, in many ways it was a very successful weekend.

Thanks to Barbara Mander who turned out at 7.15 on Saturday to collect the Tournamnet fees!

100 CLUB RAFFLE IS HERE FOR EVERYONE!!
$$$$$ $5,000 in prizes $$$$$

The Golf Section are holding a 100 Club Raffle to help fund our
upgrading of the fairways. This is a raffle where only 100
tickets are sold and there will be 9 draws conducted
throughout the year from 20th of October until 15th December.
Hopefully it will create a bit of fun along the way as well as
raise some money for the golf section and for the Club in
general!!
There will be 8 Regular Weekly Draws commencing on 20
October each with a 1st prize of $300 and 2nd prize of $200.
Then on December 15th there will be a Final Draw with a 1st
prize of $700, 2nd prize of $200 and 3rd prize of $100.
Overall there are 19 chances to win which equates to nearly a 1
in 5 chance of winning-so pretty good odds when compared
to lotto!!
All 100 numbered balls will be placed in the barrel at the start
of each draw-therefore, one number could win more than one
prize but NOT in the SAME draw. The winners DO NOT have to
be present to win.
Results of the draws will be published on the DDCC website,
in the DDCC Weekly Newsletter and on the Bar the following
Tuesday of each draw.
Tickets are for sale NOW and are $100 each. So get in quick to
be able to select your favourite number/s ticket. Some people
may wish to form a group of 4/5 people each paying $25/$20
each-this may be a good way to buy a ticket. It may be good
fun to be in a couple of groups- more chance of a win!!
Perhaps there is a birthday coming up-maybe a ticket as a
present?!?! Or maybe you might just want a ticket all to
yourself!!! Whatever suits you -we will be more than happy to
sell you a ticket!!
The first draw is on the 20th of October. So if you wish to
purchase a ticket please contact a golf member (male or
female), see the bar staff or contact Vicki Frost on 0428649810
at any time.
Thank you for your interest and we wish everyone the Best of
Luck!!!

CROQUET NEWS

                             THE HUMPTY TUMPTY CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS..

You have probably wondered where the Consumate Croquet players have been over the last couple of weeks. Owing to some much needed repair to our courts the intrepid lads and lasses ventured to fields afar to continue the beautiful game.

So It was with and air of excitement that 4 very green to the conditions Croquet players gathered on the Rugby Field, Set up the hoops and began a game of Golf Croquet. Balls did NOT go where expected and if hit hard had a tendency to bounce in any direction but through the hoop. Some wonderful incredibly lucky shots were made, a lot of shyacking and rude comments  were voiced and the winners were Karrin and Rob.

The following Friday we all gathered at The Yacht Club on Geographe Bay Rd. Two sets of hoops were deployed and some 15 or 16 persons commenced another bush bash with longer grass and deeper holes. Again it was on for young and old and some dogged play resulted in no actual winners but we all went upstairs to the bar and ribald stories of playing brilliance, were exchanged and hotly countered.

We now had begun to enjoy this Humpty Tumpty Croquet and a number of the players were beginning to understand the quirks that ensured that the Slings and Arrows of outrageous fortune were falling into place and we set up  the hoops at the bottom of Dunbay Road. We had hoped for a crowd to gather to watch the brilliance and we were not dissapointed as a young man and his dog were  avid watchers but soon moved on to more mundane persuits.

The triumph was to come last Thursday as we all met down at Bootleg Brewery on the Green Sward by the lake, set up up the hoops in varying degrees of formality and commenced our last foray into the rough and tumble of shots played through and under tables on what was a very wet paddock.

We then retired suitably chagrined by the conditions but for ever grateful that we were able to play shots that amazed and others that we will all disregard and blame on those conditions.

Karren had organised for us to play at Bootleg and afterwards we went upstairs to enjoy a private viewing of her lovely paintings and a couple of wines, beer.s and finger food. Life does not get much better than that!!!!

We are all back to the DDcc this week and one would hope that our play now has been enhanced by the Humpty Tumpty croquet and fun that went with it.

Cheers David Bell

CROQUET NEWS

Thanks to the five hardy souls namely Robin, David M,Brian, John, and David B who put their hand up to assist at a working bee yesterday morning, when they arrived it’s was raining heavily, however by the time we finished the partial top dressing of both courts it was quite sunny.  As stated at the meeting on Friday the courts are closed for the next 2 weeks, this has been brought about by the weather conditions plus the courts experiencing heavy use 4 days a week. As we have a tournament in early September this is an endeavour to present the courts in good condition.

Winner was June Case from Aviva Gordon who had to have strokes deducted.

EIGHTEEN HOLES 3RD AUG.

Once again bad weather deterred players from coming, and it was decided to play a stableford instead of stroke and putting.

Eight ladies set out to play, but heavy rain on the first two holes saw only six completing the competition.

Playing consistent golf despite the conditions, the winner was Jill Winter with 37 points, 90 strokes.

Runner up was Sharon Batchelor with 31 points.

Thurs 10th will also be a stableford.

THOUGHT OF THE WEEK.

No one fails when they do their best.

ADDITIONAL PARKING BAYS

Last week saw the bitumenising of the extra car parking area at the front of the Club. White lines will be marked to indicate parallel angle parking, however, please be aware that there are NOT any barricades in place at this time to prevent cars from nudging the limestone wall-so please be extra cautious when parking there until barricades are added. Thank you.

Something for everyone to think about!!!

October and the Club’s Annual General Meeting is approaching so it is time to think about nominating for a position on the Management Committee.

This year we have six (6) positions to fill therefore we would encourage all Members to consider nominating.

The 4 ends of the final were played at a very high standard with no one able to get the points so ended in a draw.

Well done to the 4 of you and hope to see everyone again next Tuesday.

MENS & LADIES BOWLS

Mixed Tuesday July 18th

Another very good turnout for the bowls again-20 starters and another fun day.

A different concept of bowls was played and everyone enjoyed it.

Tom Ferguson & Graeme Winter played very well all day followed by Dave & Sue Chester. All 4 made it to the finals but unfortunately the rains came along and cancelled play, making it a draw for the 4 finalists. Hope to see you all again next week for possibly another variation of the game.

Croquet News

Santa didn’t come to town, but the Christmas party on Sunday was a very festive affair.  Food and drink were wonderful, as were decorations and table settings.  Thanks to Colin and staff for great Christmas fare, to bar staff for the obvious, and to David, Wendy, Max, Karen, & Frances for the table settings and tree decoration etc.  Special thanks to Barbara for quiet achieving- organizing, table pieces and raffle.

Croquet is just a little bit competitive and we high-five ourselves for being perhaps the smallest section in the Club with the biggest representation at Christmas in July.  Many thanks from the croquet players to Max for his generous donation of wine for our tables.

Croquet is in need of a green keeper!  Is there anyone out there who has skill, interest and time?  Please talk to Max.
