Men’s Bowls News

Thursday Social Bowls continues to attract large fields in excess of 40 players. A welcome spirit of camaraderie persists and essentially I believe the event is seen as an afternoon of fun bowling in good company. Pete Cracknell and John Tucker ensure that the event is well run.

The Friday Twilight Game still sustains a good following and I believe more should be made of this event next season given it has the potential of attracting a significant tourist following, if well marketed. This is evidenced by the recent number of players involved that jumped from 14 two weeks ago to an impressive 28 last Friday!! Well-deserved thanks are extended to Butch, Geoff and their supporters for the excellent effort they provide on Fridays.

Bankers Club will be played in Busso next Tuesday.

Bootleg Brewery Pairs Championship was played over two consecutive Sundays and a high standard of bowling was seen throughout.

It was most encouraging to note the significant inclusion of new bowlers to this event and see them perform most admirably.

Ed Hoemberg and Kelly Allsop took out the major prize with Ben Tas and Clive Williams putting in an excellent challenge to finish Runners Up.

The Plate was won by Mike Brown and Geoff Oddy from Tim Sansom and Ralph Don.

Tom Reynolds was present to make the presentations on behalf of the Bootleg Brewery and was thanked by the Chairman, Dennis Frost, for his continued sponsorship of this event.

A good crowd of supporters was there to encourage the players and add a carnival atmosphere to the event.

The Professionals Mens’ Singles Championship will be run over the next two Sundays and it is hoped that a significant number of bowlers will nominate for this prestigious event. Again it is most heartening to note new bowlers nominating for this event, realising that such experience gained can only be a plus for their future bowling involvement.

This event has been brought forward which allows our Championship calendar to be completed by the end of February, together with the Pennants competition, in preparation for the Champion of Champions Day, to be held this year in Dunsborough.

Traders Day is scheduled for Thursday 10th March and fliers have been mailed out. It is hoped that we will attract good support from beyond our own Club as well as from within as good cash prizes are offered.

The William Barrett Mixed Fours event is to be held on Monday 22nd February and the ladies have preparations in hand. More teams are wanted to ensure the success of the event. An amendment has been made that re-aligns the entry fee with the $60 charged in the past two years.

Country Week – A good representation from our Club members is making the pilgrimage to this year’s Country Week and we wish them well, both physically and professionally!

Pennants – With only Game 10 remaining on February 20th, the Finals are scheduled for Sunday 28th February. First Division is in an interesting position being 11/2 points behind Augusta and ½ point ahead of Margaret River.

I have purchased a Thermometer, as requested, and installed it in an appropriate shield. It has been passed on to Rod Winchcombe for positioning.

Thanks again to members of my Match Committee for their continued help and advice in the preparation and running of the past events and those in the pipeline. It is very encouraging for me to have the support of newer member John Tucker coupled with the experience of Ian Creagh, Tom Reynolds and Kevin Gibb.

Wendell and Janice Hoover continue their IT support in respect to Flier design and competition recording.

A great big THANKYOU to the following people, namely Marie, Rosy, Helen,Terry,Jerry,David B,and our newby David Collins who wielded the whipper snipper, the amount of work we covered in a relatively short time, has resulted in the courts looking well cared for.

In the near future we will be putting the grooming mower over court 1. Court 2 will be top dressed shortly afterwards this will result in each court be out of action for a week.

Ricochet Competition.

The much vaunted Ricochet competition is taking place on the Friday and Saturday of the second weekend in March. We are looking to have a mix of AC and Golf players competing in pairs on set out times that suit all parties followed on Friday by a meal at the  Club with spouses and Were Just Good Friends.  Saturday will be the same format completing all the games and having Tapas and impromptu prizes  and a couple of glasses of your favourite tipple.

We are looking to bring both Golf and AC players in to a format that is not overly serious ….like the fun day we had last year……but is competitive and brings both the Golf and AC players together both as players of this Lovely game and socially There will be a list on the Croquet Board for you to enter either in Pairs or singularly. And we THE Captains Glen and David B will put you together with an inexperienced or experienced player to make it a level  and fun playing field.

Course Reno Update

The sub committee is now fine tuning the final topping mix for our greens which have now settled quite well.  It involves some screening and careful application but the trial seems to have worked well.
