BOWLS NEWS

MEN’S BOWLS

Tuesday

Our first side maintained their spot at the top of the SWBL 2nd division ladder despite losing away to Brunswick by the close margin of 39-43. The side is just half a point ahead of Busselton Red after 5 of the 14 rounds.

Not such a good story for our second team which lost away to Capel by 29-46. The team is now 6th on the 3rd division ladder of 8 teams.

Thursday

It was a good turnout for the 2-peg draw on a warm day and the meat was taken by just a 2 shot-margin after the usual two 12-ends. Chris Adams and Rob Pollard were ably assisted by Roger Badans of Busselton to win the meat while the triple of Jimmy Walker, Les Gulberti, and Lindsay Blyth (also of Busselton) went home with the Mars bar.

Saturday

In the Leeuwin League, Dunsborough Blue maintain their position at the top of the single ladder beating Cowaranup Maroon by 66-23. Also playing at home, Dunsborough Gold ran easy winners over Nannup by 55-27. The third of our four sides on our carpets, saw Dunsborough White be the third home side to take away 4 points, when they overcame Margaret River White by just 7 shots, 44-37. Meanwhile, playing away, Dunsborough Red were overwhelmed by Augusta Blue by 63-25. Augusta Blue are just 1.5 points behind Dunsborough Blue. Dunsborough White are in 4th place just half a point behind Cowaranup Gold. Dunsborough Red are 7th while Dunsborough Gold are 10th on the 12-side ladder.

Monday

Six new members took part in the first round of the Novices’ Championship which our captain, Geoff Benn, arranged as a Round Robin event this year. Nearly all the games were fiercely fought, the 21-shot winners doing so by just one or two shots only. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie shared by these 6 bowlers both on the carpets and in the clubroom afterwards. The 2nd round of the Veterans Championship saw Rob Prentice win all of the games in his section while, on a count-back, three players who had each lost one game in the other section saw Norm Gage win by just one shot over Hans Queckfeldt who beat Mike Brown, the other section winner, on the day.

The 2nd round of this Novices’ Championship will take place at 12.30 this Friday with the final commencing about 3 pm. at which time Rob Prentice will play Norm Gage in the final of the Veterans Competition.

MEN’S GOLF

Mens Golf Newsletter       28 November 2017

Our regular Wednesday game last week saw a good win for Arnold Bosenberg  scoring 40 stb  points  with Doug Gilchrist  being Runner up on 38, just ahead  of Mal Williamson on 37.

The rest of the field  : Ron Carmody 36, Jim Parry 32, Barry Jackson 31, Ken Littlefair 29, Geoff Musto 28 and Doug MacPherson  26 .

It is good to see the wins being shared around while Barry Jackson won the novelty on No 18.

Saturday was a warm one and we know summer is on the course as the fairway Christmas Trees are now in bloom so we have a good marker to aim for whether intentionally or by default.

Rising to the spirit of the occasion Jim Parry carded a great 42 with Ron Carmody just behind on 41. Ron managed to pip Jim for the novelty on No 18. Barry Jackson scored a 39, Arnold Bosenberg  33, Peter Jordan 28 and Mal Williamson on 25.

TENNIS NEWS

.

The Tennis Section undertook another major Busy Bee last weekend and would like to thank the following Members for their very welcome support:

Rob & Bay Wilson, Bob Waterman, Brian Walker, Ray Hirst, Maree Jager (garden is looking wonderful), Gwen and Arnold Bosenberg (and that wonderful Dingo!), Les Auty, David Murrish, Mike & Marlene Howes, John McCallum, Jan Pendrigh, Yvee Hirst (wonderful scones, jam & cream for our much needed break).  Bernie Dwyer has agreed to do the brick paving this week.  Barry Jackson (Golf Section) also assisted by driving the tractor to move yellow sand into position ready for the brick paving.

Monday saw a continuation of the work with Bernie Dwyer doing a fabulous job of the brick paved path from Courts 3 & 4 to the Tennis Shed. A work of art – it looks terrific Bernie!

Bob Waterman also spent most of the day (with Marlene as Acting T/A), levelling, lifting, laying and mortaring limestone blocks to provide a retaining wall for the soil against the new Courts, thereby increasing and tidying the “hit up” area. In both cases, this was a hot and heavy day’s work.  Thanks Bob!

The completion of these jobs has made a huge improvement to the area.  Thank you to all who gave up their time to assist.

Marlene Howes

CYCLING NEWS

Hi riders,

Thanks to the small but efficient group who helped out clearing vegetation from the sides of the trails on Sunday. Your calves will appreciate less scratches on some trails, but we ran out of time and volunteers to finish the whole network.

Join us on Sunday, Dec 3rd at 3pm for a social ride on a mostly downhill course, with one small hill included. Meet at the skills area for a 3pm start, ride into Meelup for a familiarisation ride of the route, then ride Meelup and the newly upgraded Fireys Descent. BYO timing, Strava if any PBs are intended!

Kids able to ride up to, and ride the Green trail in Meelup are welcome.

Finish with a drink and bar snacks at the Country Club after the ride.

As always, ride at your own risk and within your ability level.

Hope to see you there,

Helen
