BOWLS NEWS

MEN’S BOWLS

On Friday 24th November Mick Finney, Kevin Gibb, Geoff Oddy, and Geoff Benn won the Bootleg Brewery Championship Fours, beating Rob Prentice’s team in the finals. At one stage Geoff Benn’s team was 10-1 ahead but the final score was a closer 23-18. Congratulations to three stalwarts of the club and especially to the new bowler Mick Finney

On Monday 27th November Mike O’Mara joined the five new bowlers pictured above, the six of them taking part in the final rounds of the Novices’Round Robin. As in the earlier rounds most of the games resulted in nailbiting finishes, including the final in which Toby McCarthy (centre) beat Mick Finney 21-19. All of the bowlers enjoyed the fierce competition and expressed thanks to their mentor, Wayne Coyle, for the coaching they had received.

On rink 1 Norm Gage proved poor opposition for Rob Prentice who won the final of the club Veterans 21-7. This was Rob’s second success in this event.

Tuesday 28th November

In the SWBL our first team were at home to Bunbury and Geoff Benn’s and Gary Davies’ teams both won, the side winning by 41-33 so that Dunsborough is well ahead of the other seven teams on the 2nd division ladder.

Our second midweek side were at home to Busselton and both teams, led by Rob Prentice and Graeme Winter also won their games gaining the four points by 48-24. However Dunsborough’s position in the 3rd division remains unchanged, being sixth of the eight teams.

Thursday 29th November

32 players turned up for Peter Cracknell’s peg-draw on a fine day. The meat was won easily by Kevin Gibb, ably supported by Ken Littlefair with two wins +25. Johnny Cunneen, Rob Prentice and a new bowler, Adrian Porter, went home with a chocolate.

Friday, 2nd December

Just nine players turned up for social bowls in the evening run by Butch and Sharon Sharpe. A good time was shared by all but it would be encouraging to see more participation in this fun event.

Saturday, 3rd December

There was a home derby between Dunsborough Red and Dunsborough Blue, Dunsborough Blue retaining their position at the top of the Leeuwin League ladder when Gary Davies’ and Mike Brown’s teams beat Graeme Winter’s and Brian Buttsworth’s teams. Dunsborough Blue’s four points sees them almost a game ahead of Cowaranup Gold in second place on the ladder.

Dunsborough White were away to Margaret River Green and lost the four point aggregate 55-27. Bill Hitsert’s team suffered a heavy defeat, but Ian Creagh’s rink were only three shots short at the end of the day. Dunsborough White are sixth on the 12-side ladder.

Dunsborough Gold lost to Cowaranup Gold at Cowtown by 46-25. Both Wendell Hoover’s and Don Henderson’s teams came second, placing Dunsborough Gold in 10th place on the ladder.

THE DAVID WHITTAKER MEMORIAL CUP

Members of Tuesday’s tennis team played the first leg of The David Whittaker Memorial Cup against Busselton in at Busselton and unfortunately lost 9 sets to 7sets.

The team had a slow start on the grass courts and were 4 sets down after the first round. They recovered in the second round to be only 5 to 3 down but unfortunately our number 1 player was injured in the third round and was unable to play in the last round.Only  down by 2 sets the team is confident it can make up ground and win the cup when the return match is played at our home courts early February

The 2017 Ironman & 70.3 Event at Busselton

The 2017 Ironman & 70.3 Event was held in hot conditions over a course in the Busselton area on Sunday 3 December.  Our coach, Paige Newhill, and a large group of her junior players and supporters worked as volunteers for this event.  This is a highly organised event with international and local athletes competing in this challenging course.  This event is also a fundraising opportunity for the Tennis Section and I was fortunate to be working a shift with Paige at this event.    Thanks Paige for your organisation, your catering, plugging the gaps wherever required and the effort of organising all of your helpers.

As you may have heard, the swim leg of the event was cancelled due to a shark sighting in the area, but did not deter the enthusiasm of the competitors.

I would encourage anyone to volunteer next year – it’s a real treat to see these amazing competitors.

Thank you!

Marlene Howes
