MENS’ BOWLS

Thursday 15th Dec

Winners on plus 4 Toby Mc Carthy, K Gibb,

R/U plus 16 K Hill and G Benn.  The dconsolation on plus 9 was W Hoover and G Owens and the MB went to L Blyth and B Marwick.  There was a good roll up with 40 players.

The Dunsborough bowling club hosted the final of the Leeuwin League men’s pennant final last Sunday with a semi final for Division Two being played in the morning between Dunsborough White and Augusta.  Brian Buttsworth and Norm Gage skipped the two teams for Dunsborough with great success and lead their side into the final against Margaret River in the afternoon final.  Having just played 21 ends it in over three hours it was going to be a mammoth effort for the side if they could succeed in the final.

Succeed they did.  Right from the first end each team lead and maintained their consistency and concentration to take out the Division Two Shield having the aggregate of 44-26.

Division One was a straight final between Dunsborough and Margaret River.  The Dunsborough team lead by Geoff Benn played with the same dominance they have displayed over the season and had no trouble in dispatching the opposition skipped by Leith Bussell.  Mike Brown played against David Head in a great battle with each team playing bowls of a high quality and it was not until the 19th end that Margaret River managed to score three which proved to be the end of the battle for Dunsborough going down by five shots.

However the final is won on aggregate alone and not on individual team scores.  A running aggregate score was on display at all times and spectators and skips alike could see how the two clubs were faring.  Edmund Hoemberg from Dunsborough knew he needed two shots to take the aggregate and the shield on his last end.  His team was holding that two and they were going to be one up on the aggregate until Margaret River’s skip Mick Pepper put his last bowl down and expertly drew shot to take out the championship and shield with an aggregate of 58-56.

Now that the short pennant season is over for the League they are preparing for a new experimental venture into what has been called “Super Six” which will be set up once again with two divisions and each side playing singles, pairs and triples.

The Men’s Bowling Committee has decided in future to charge a green fee of $5, in addition to an entry fee, for any social bowls games, to any member of the club who is not also a Bowling Club member. This will be done to ensure fairness to those who pay an annual fee of $150 to join the Bowling Section.

GOLF NEWS

Newsletter   Men’s Golf Section     20  December, 2016.

                                (Ron Carmody –Capt)

LAST SATURDAY  had keen golfers getting their final games in before  Christmas .

Winner on the day was Jim Parry  with a score of 32 closely followed by Barry Jackson on 31.

Jim Parry also won the longest putt on No 18.

Other players saw  more of the course than the prescribed 14 holes with cliff hanging putts on the edge of the cup just not going in  and shots across  parallel fairways not being uncommon! It’s also remarkable how a ball can finish up at the base of a tall solid tree.!!

This week  Wednesday Golf will be a self help day for intending golfers as Ron  is an apology for both Wednesday and Saturday.

I take this opportunity to wish you all the best for the festive season and look forward to seeing you on the tee in the New Year.

TENNIS NEWS

The Tennis Section enjoyed some Christmas Spirit on Saturday with 31 players enjoying a tennis afternoon with a difference.  Thirty one players enjoyed some great matches, encouraged by those watching.  The sets were played with all players having only one serve (no second serve).  This changed the game dramatically, and when results for the afternoon were calculated those with the most games were Joyce Van Kleef and David Murrish.   Well done, Joyce and David who managed the change of play well.

Following the tennis afternoon, players and partners enjoyed dinner prepared by chef, Colin Lyttle, at the Club.  Fifty-two people attended the dinner which was a record number for the Tennis Section.  It was a very social evening with everyone enjoying the friendships and camaraderie they have developed through their various tennis days.

Greg Banfield outlined the updated plans for the new tennis courts and confirmed that the application for a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation had been successful and it was hoped that the development of the new courts and re-surfacing of the current courts would commence at the end of February 2017.  This will provide much needed space for our growing Tennis Section.

Best wishes to all for an enjoyable Christmas and 2017.

” The members of the Tennis Tragix team usually reign on our tennis courts but this year they proved their metal on the bowling rinks winning the Wednesday Corporate Bowls . A great team effort and the beginning of a new order
