Saturday Pennants.
There was a derby at the club for Pennants Div 2 between White and Blue. The teams had been rearranged a little since last week and made for an interesting comp with both teams wanting the honours. C Williams White and B Pearce Blue were on 14 all with the final three ends to be played. This is where the Blue hit the accelerator and took seven shots to win 21-14.
N Gage and his White team came from behind 8-17 on the 13th end to win the next seven ends and be up by four shots. B Marwick’s Blue team won the last end but went down by three.

The aggregate was won by Blue 39-35 and 3-1 points.

The Div 1 team travelled to Augusta for their opening game of the season with mixed results of a loss, a draw and a win and Augusta taking 4 ½ points.
M Brown’s team went down 13-27, Ed Hoemburg’s team had a draw and G Benn’s team won by a shot and the aggregate was lost 52-65.

Duns Div One will be playing at Cowaramup next week, as will Div Two White. The Blue Div 2 team will be at Augusta.

We would like more teams for the William Barrett & Cape Financial Planners open mixed fours event, this is any combination mixed fours. Please get your team on the board.

Croquet News

A team of five AC croquet players travelled to Bunbury Central Club to play at an Invitation Day on 13th October. Our “team” may have swamped the field, but there were individuals from other south west clubs attending. Raelene Willis won the day with Terry Herd coming equal second and taking off the raffle.
A couple of carloads of people are expected to go to Augusta on October 24th to play GC.
If you don’t know the terms AC and GC please ask us.

Newsletter Men’s Golf Section

18 October, 2016. (Ron Carmody –Capt)

(Some excerpts from our AGM Golf Report for the Interests of Members)

‘This is a historic year for the golf section of the DDCC

The first minutes of the Golf Section are dated 21/10/1976 with play commencing on Sunday 24 October, 1976.
This is our 40 th Anniversary year.

Quite a lot of work occurred prior to this with clearing, leveling and seeding which entailed many busy bees – a real community effort.

Glyn Evans, whose name appears on No 18 Fairway , was one of those willing volunteers. He not only used his bulldozer to clear the first nine holes, but also , several years later, helped with the back nine. He would not accept any payment,
not even petrol money. The second nine holes were started in December, 1982 and in November, 1983, four holes of the second nine were ready to be used.

Forty years on, 2016, the DDCC has continued in this spirit with the complete renovation of eighteen greens using a blue metal base and a fine light grit topping. The greens are consistent, meet the course rating standard, require less maintenance and have withstood the prolonged winter .
We had 114 visiting Vets golfers from around the south west play the course in August and received favourable feedback on the course renovation.
Many thanks to all involved in large and small ways in this major project.
The course was a picture last week with the first real burst of sunshine for many weeks.

Further upgrades have been possible with the purchase of a good second hand fairway mower, the setting up of a work roster of members now, to assist the very good work that has been carried out by Barry Jackson , Mike Brown , Stephen Robertson, Brian Morris, Barry Guest, Ken Littlefair, busy bees by members and individual efforts spread throughout the season.
Thanks to you all. There is always room for further volunteers at any time.!
Course wise, we are limited with the opportunity for prescribed burning in several areas but are continuing to work within these established guidelines.
Spraying of weeds etc has been carried out as necessary .
Thanks to Ian Potts for keeping us up to the mark in these and other special areas including finance, plans, WA Clubs.

I would also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the very special and valued support given by the Hon Barry House, MLC, as Club Patron over many years and wish him a well earned retirement.

We are now working towards upgrading the Tee Signs which also may attract some sponsorship.
We continue to benefit from the playing public and visitors as some of these are potential members. Hire clubs and buggies are available.
The new major Entry Sign will be of advantage to all.

Special thanks to Vicki Frost also for her work with several Juniors and the engagement of the professional ,Stephen Dartnell.
Vicki’s successful efforts with the 100 Club this year is also acknowledged.
The DDCC is the second best attendee of the South West Country Veterans which has some 25 fixtures per annum and thanks to Mark Embry for his efforts as our leading delegate.
The DDCC enjoys a positive image throughout the south west golf fraternity.”

We look forward to seeing you on the course in the near future.

(Brian Morris – President Ron Carmody – Captain)

Coming Events This Week
Wednesday Scroungers 19 October, 2016 12.00 Hit Off.
(As several members will be playing Vets at Binningup other Members are to make up their game for this afternoon.)

Saturday 22 October, 2016 Stableford

Please note that the Hit Off for this event will be 10.00 am so that we will be clear of the course to allow for the setting up of the Cape to Cape Cycle Event from 4.00 pm. Onwards.
This adjustment has been made in conjunction with the Cycle Section who will be hosting the annual Cape to Cape Event on Sunday.

The Golf Section has volunteered to again do the parking of vehicles on Sunday morning and any members who are free to assist as Parking Marshalls from 8.00 am till 12.00 are most welcome to join with the Members who have already indicated to volunteer in the morning. The Gold Coin Donations we have collected in the past years is a great boost to our funding commitments for the upkeep and maintenance of the course etc.
Please assemble at the Golf Shed at 8.00 am and President Brian will coordinate the tasks. Many thanks in anticipation.

Last Week’s Results
Congratulations to Mark Embry who won on a countback from Ken Littlefair with both scoring 34 points.

Tennis News

Four Junior tennis teams have been entered into the South West Zone Tennis Competition this season, two Girls’ teams (the first time Girls’ teams have been entered from Dunsborough), and two Boys’ teams. (Team coaching photo below).  Paige Newhill is coaching these players for the competition to increase their exposure to other players from other Clubs which will also give them the opportunity to improve their play, including their positioning of strokes, their knowledge of scoring and keeping score, as well as their knowledge of tennis etiquette.  These opportunities are also important in providing Junior players with a higher degree of self-esteem in their playing ability enabling them to seamlessly join a Club of their choice in later years.

Ladies’ Social Tennis continues on Thursday mornings and Mixed Social Tennis on Saturday afternoons from 1.30 pm, despite the very long and windy, wet and grey winter.  It takes a lot to keep tennis players off a court — we can see sunshine in every raindrop!
