BOWLS NEWS

MEN’S BOWLS

MIXED TUESDAY SOCIAL BOWLS

Another perfect day of weather brought out 26 bowlers for a very fun day of bowls. Trevor Palmer bowled extremely well all day to qualify first in the finals, followed by Judy Henderson, Jem Coupar and Daisy Grist.

In the Final, Trevor again bowled exceptionally well to take out the major prize. Well done and we hope to see you again next Tuesday.

THURSDAY BOWLS

Thirty-seven bowlers turned up for the usual Thursday fun on a clear day. Martin Osborne, Ken Hill, and Cliff Dawson of Busselton went home with the meat while Ken Holyoake, Rob Prentice, and Wally Dawson of Busselton were runners-up. Norm Gage, Toby McCarthy, and Johnny Cunneen took the chocolate.

Saturday’s attendance remains poor despite the lovely autumn weather, with just ten bowlers taking part in a mixed peg-draw. Graham Povey, visiting from Mosman Park, won the day, with Gail Barry and Ken Littlefair running second and third.

LEAGUE CLUB CHALLENGE 3

Last Saturday’s games were played at Margaret River and once again the weather was perfect.  According to Ian Creagh the weather will be perfect for months to come!

Augusta had a bad day finishing with just one point and that was against our own team.  We were taken to a tie breaker with them once again, won it and came away with the four points.  Our next game was against Cowaramup and we won both sets to collect the maximum five points.  Then we faced Margaret River, the team which was having a great day.

We won our first set quite comfortably but before we could say “ready for the next set” they took a massive jump on us and were 8 zip just on the second end.  They won that set so again we went to a tie breaker.

Margs was holding shot and it was left up to Dennis to take charge.  He let loose with a brilliant shot moving in quietly and resting on the MR shot. Not to be outdone MR skip let loose also and hit our shot and the jack which moved sideways.  Fortunately we had the last bowl and Dennis did another magnificent shot to win the four points for us.

We travel next week to Augusta and five points up on that club.  We sit on 33 points, they have 28, MR now has 16 and Cowaramup are on 14.  As there are points available each game we need to ensure we get one third of those points to take the first title.  It will be difficult and we can be assured that we will have tie breakers.  Good luck to our team.

TENNIS NEWS

There was perfect tennis weather on Saturday 12 May for the Official Opening of the new Dunsborough Tennis courts.  City of Busselton Mayor, Grant Henley, attended and carried out the Official Opening with a successful serve over the net.

The day was combined with the running of Ye Olde Devon Cowbell Tournament which was run by Greg Banfield.  This is always a great fun event and the winner of the tournament this year was Dee Kovijanic who will have her name inscribed on the old cowbell.  Prizes were also presented and other winners were John McCallum, Patrick Mulhern, Nita Pratt and Keith Williams.   Well done winners!  Members and friends adjourned to the Clubrooms following the event and enjoyed a well-deserved rest.
