CROQUET NEWS

Our club is probably the only croquet club in Western Australia where it is possible to play all 3 forms of the game.

Golf croquet, the basic form, is played at 4pm on Wednesdays and 3pm on Fridays. Please have your names in 15mins prior to the start time to give the captains a chance to organise games.  New players are welcome to join us anytime and basic coaching is available. Numbers, particularly on Wednesday, have necessitated rotating players because the courts can only cater for 16 players at a time. We have welcomed visitors from England and New Zealand and several weeks ago we were joined by 9 players from Busselton. These visitors stayed for the Friday night meal.

Increased numbers for golf croquet has highlighted the need for another playing day, so we have introduced ricochet sessions for those needing a bit more of a challenge.

Eight players are giving it a go, and sessions have been held on a Wednesday or Friday afternoon prior to golf croquet, with coaching from experienced players. The decision has not yet been made about a separate playing day for this form of croquet.

Association Croquet, the most advanced form of the game is played on Tuesday and Friday morning. Names need to be in at 8.15am for an 8.30 start. There are 6 regular players. Terry Herd and Vaile Drake competed at Bunbury Central over the long weekend and Helen South and Vaile Drake have been attending coaching sessions in Bunbury. These are conducted by Janine Hawker, an Australian representative. Our local Div 2 player, David Morris, has made himself available to coach new players in Dunsborough.

At the end of April the club will be hosting a Div 2 tournament for Croquet West. Greenkeeper, Raelene Willis, has done a wonderful job and both courts are ready for competitive play. Wooden barriers have been installed between court 1 and B Green to prevent balls from interfering with bowls. These were made by the Men’s Shed.

Twilight Croquet at 5.15pm on Friday nights is a great introduction to croquet and several players have advanced from here to become members of the croquet section.

The cost is $6 and equipment and basic coaching is provided. Twilight croquet will continue until the end of March.

A/C 14pt Doubles Bunbury Croquet Club

Congratulations to Vaile Drake who competed in her first Croquet Tournament last Sunday. Players from Halls Head, Moorabinda and Bunbury Central played 3 Doubles matches and 1 Singles match each. Unfortunately both Vaile and Terry Herd ended up in the bottom half of the results sheet, crumpling in the afternoon heat after a productive morning. The experience however is invaluable and all contact helps put Dunsborough on the Croquet map.
