Happenings Around The Club

Local Vintage

A fantastic afternoon was had by all on Sunday with 140 people in attendance.  Local Vintage played great music all afternoon and had people up on the dance floor.  There was many laughs and a few cold beverages consumed.   The relaxed atmosphere was a great way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon with Club members and friends.  Local Vintage will be playing again at the Club on Sunday, 11th of March.  Tickets are now available at the bar.  $10 members, $15 non members.

BOWLS NEWS

MEN’S BOWLS

Tuesday

Our first team was away at Bunbury and came away with four points when Mike Brown’s team won 18-26 and Gary Davies’s four won 18-31. This outstanding result sees Dunsborough back at the top of the 2nd  division ladder, a point ahead of Busselton Red who they meet at home in the last round of this year’s 2nd division of the SWBL today, and hopefully secure a home qualifying final (possibly against Busselton Red!).

Meanwhile in Division 3, our second Dunsborough team secured only 0.5 points playing away at Busselton when Graeme Winter’s team lost 26-22 and Rob Prentice’s four drew 23-all. Dunsborough remains fifth on the 3rd  division ladder with just one home game to go against Eaton Gold.

Thursday

Sadly, this was Peter Cracknell’s last commitment to supervising our peg-draw which he has done so cheerfully and successfully over many years.

38 bowlers enjoyed a pleasant day on both carpets with Rod Winchcombe partnering Wally Dawson to win the meat with two games +19, pipping John Halden and Mick Finney, just one shot behind. Butch Sharpe and Norman Gage took the Mars bar (perhaps this says something about their partners in the finals of the pairs competition this Friday?)

Our Captain paid tribute to all Peter Cracknell had done for us on Thursdays over the years and for his other long-standing contributions to Dunsborough Bowling Club. Members present also bade their personal farewells and thanks to Peter.

N.B.

The Semifinals of the Leeuwin League will be held this Saturday, February 17th at Margaret River. Our 1st  Division side, Dunsborough Blue, will play Margaret River Green, while our 2nd  Division side, Dunsborough White, will meet Cowaranup Gold. Both sides should attend by 1 pm. for a 1.30 start. Naturally, all supporters will be welcome and the games will be followed by a barbecue with a charge of $10.

LADIES BOWLS

Apologies for the fake news last week .Jill Winter has been picked in the Interzone fours to be played at Jurien Bay.

Maureen Hines and Janice Hoover have been picked in the Interzone pairs to be played at Wickepin.

Pennant points are Duns White 54, M/R gold 49 1/2, Augusta 49, M/R Green 45, Duns Blue 35 1/2,   Cowaramup 17 1/2.

With one more round to be played at Dunsborough before the finals, the three top teams all have a chance.

The first round of the ladies pairs Championship was played last Wednesday 7th and will be concluded on the 21st.

The singles championship will be played on Wednesday 14th.

TENNIS NEWS

Dunsborough clinch Whittaker Tennis Challenge

The Dunsborough Tennis Club secured a win in the Whittaker Cup Challenge after an emphatic 11 sets to 5 result over defending champions, Busselton on Tuesday.

The men’s team competition is named in honour of David Whittaker, a past member of both clubs and is played over two ties, one played at each of the Clubs. Busselton had a close win 9-7 in the first tie in December at Busselton’s grass courts but Dunsborough went into the second tie on their home hard courts with confidence and a rejuvenated line-up.

The contest was all even after the first round of matches but then Dunsborough pulled away in the second and came home with a wet sail by winning 6 out of the last 8 matches. Dunsborough won three of the four matches that went to a tie-breaker and those clutch wins proved a decisive factor in their victory.

Paul Moss and Ray Hurst were the stars, winning all four of their matches while John Stewart claimed three wins and Mike Roberts came in as a handy sub for the injured Brian Walker. Tony Crolla, Jim Davies, Greg Banfield and David Murrish were also strong contributors. Doug Hutchison was best for Busselton with three wins.

Kara Whittaker presented the trophy to the winners.
