Happenings Around The Club

A Big Thankyou

On behalf of the Dunsborough Country Club I would like to acknowledge and thank Rob Prentice for all of the time and effort he put into the Club as President.  He worked tirelessly on so many projects  over the past three years like the bowling green replacement, front entry statement and gardens to name a few.  He had to make a few tough calls as President. Rob has left the Club in a great position to continue to grow and develop in the coming years.  Thanks Rob.

‘Yoga for over 50’s’ at Dunsborough and Districts Country Club, for ladies AND gentlemen ~

Beginners welcome !

In the words of local Dunsborough resident and yoga instructor Mandy Lancellas ‘I thrive on encouraging those who feel they ‘can’t do yoga’ to become those who can, by exploring the multiple benefits for the body, mind and soul. Gentle Hatha Yoga enables the body and mind to find calm and focus in the present moment. It is through breath awareness that we manage to realign our physical body with the mental and energetic systems. Our main focus is safe and effective alignment, to create awareness, strength and mobility. As we grow older the saying of ‘what we do not use, we loose’ begins to resonate with us more and more and so its vital to keep the body moving in a gentle and safe way, maintaining a healthy range of movement throughout our senior years and reducing the risks of injury.’

Mandy invites anyone who is interested to join this gentle and safe yoga practice, suitable for all levels including beginners and people over 50.

Date: Wednesdays

Time: 9:00 am

Venue: Dunsborough and Districts Country Club

Cost: $15

* Please bring a blanket for relaxation (as well as your own yoga mat if you have one).

* Yoga mats available for hire $3

For any queries (or to book a yoga mat) please call Mandy Lancellas 047 505 7294

New Members who join the Dunsborough Country Club in October will receive a complimentary lesson.

MEN’S BOWLS

Thursday

47 bowlers enjoyed the spring sunshine. Hans Queckfeldt, Mike Brown, and Rob Prentice took home the meat, with Wally Dawson and Mike Finney runners-up. The consolation was shared between Bruce Edgar/Kevin Gibb and the trio of Bill Hitsert/Ken Holyoake/and Henk DeBoer. Gary Robinson and Heinz Fischer enjoyed the chocolate.

Saturday – Pennants

On a chilly afternoon there was a home derby between Dunsborough White and Dunsborough Blue. Ed Hoemburg ‘s four defeated Tom Reynolds’ team, 37-9, to gain the White side three home points, while Bill Hitsert’s team came from behind to defeat Mike Brown’s four, 21-20, to earn Dunsborough Blue one away point.

(Dunsborough Gold had a bye.)

Monday – Ken Rowell Mixed Fours

Their to was a goodly turnout for the first open competition of respect the season with most rinks being filled on the two carpets. Sue Chester’s team were the only four to win all three games and to champion the day. Lindsay Blythe’s Busselton four were not far behind with two wins plus a draw, with Ian Creagh’s and Toby McCarthy’s teams taking up third and fourth places respectively.

Old-friends Update

Of our three breathless friends it was good to see Brian Morris hopping around the clubhouse again after a recent hospitalisation, while Pat Hines still enjoys popping in for a beer and encouraging his wife from the veranda, beer in hand. Bill Marwick is presently confined to home but we hope to see him again this summer.

Clem Taylor has enjoyed a coffee with Merv Mott recently and still remains keen to trundle his multicoloured bowls down the carpet one of these days having recovered from major surgery many months ago.

Martin Osborn tells us he is still alive and promises to remember where the club is this coming Thursday.

Terry Cuttriss broke an ankle after a fall and rumour has it is presently enjoying respite in Donnybrook Hospital.

Tim Sansom has moved up to Perth to look after his ailing parents but will enjoy more bowls at Dalkeith Bowling Club.

Ian Creagh will swap bowls for hay-making at the family farm for the foreseeable future.

MEN’S GOLF

Recent Events

Wednesday  10 October       Scroungers

Winner

With a great score of 35 points Mal Williamson carried off the day  followed by Barry Jackson as Runner up with 27.points.

Laurie Richards had his eye in with the longest putt on No 18.

Saturday  13 October

Winner

With a runaway score of 40 points, Doug Gilchrist blitzed the field  showing that long walks and  good exercise as experienced on his recent holiday primes one for a good game of golf.

Runner Up with a good score of 35 was Rob Lucy who played with quiet confidence and steady golf making sure that he was in control of his shots, most of the time parring five holes out of the eighteen holes.

Not to be outdone Jim Parry putted well for No 18 and  Doug Gilchrist  was NTP on No 10,    Well played guys.

Coming Events

Wednesday   17  October          Scroungers   12.00 Noon Tee Off

Saturday         20 October           Stableford.   12.00 Noon Tee Off

At the AGM of the DDCC  held on Sunday 14 October , John Halden from the Bowls Section was elected as President for the  2019 Year and  Golf has retained Brian Morris, Helen Rowell and Ron Carmody as DDCC Committee members.

Thanks to all for your continuing support for the oncoming season.

The AGM for the Men’s Golf Section is to be held soon and will be advised in the near future.

For animal lovers, we counted 42 kangaroos on the No 8  Fairway on Saturday.

Fortunately all our shots were good and cleared the  temporary obstructions with ease. Strange, there is no set Aussie rule on hitting a kangaroo except our local rule entitling a striker to another shot!  Good choice of club and a good follow through shows the skill of our DDCC golfers  when required.

Good   Golfing All  !

Ron Carmody   Captain

TENNIS NEWS

A group from Dunsborough Tennis attended the Australind Gala Day on Tuesday 9 October and the Club was well represented with winners.  Annie Mulhern, Jan Pendrigh, Brigitte Ghedina and Gwen Bosenberg were section winners on the day (photo attached).   Congratulations to you all!  The weather was perfect and Australind always manages to have a good number of players attend this day.

It was very encouraging to see the Thursday Ladies’ Social Tennis group have such a successful Opening Day for the 2018/19 season and especially good to be able to encourage some new members to the group.  The organising ladies were also very pleased to have good weather for the day.

The Saturday Social Tennis Opening Day is set for Saturday 3 November.  We look forward to seeing all of our travellers back from their overseas destinations to welcome in the summer of Saturday tennis.  A few “different” sets are planned for the day and some treats.  Please make an effort to attend on this day – we are sure the weather will be excellent!

A reminder that the Tennis Section’s Christmas Dinner is planned for Saturday 24 November in the Clubrooms from 6.00 pm.  Please mark this date in your calendars to attend this Christmas gathering.  It is a great opportunity to spend some time with your tennis friends before the rush of Christmas commitments descends on us.

A reminder to all Tennis members that although you are a member, you are required to make a booking on the Booking Sheet outside the main clubroom doors if you wish to you the courts.   This ensures you are not using the courts booked by another person or group.  If you are not a current member, then you must pay a fee of $20.00 per hour to use the courts as well as make your booking on the Booking Sheet.

Annie Mulhern, Jan Pendrigh, Brigitte Ghedina, Gwen Bosenberg.

A very successful Open Day was held on the 9th October, with over 30 ladies attending from 9am – 50% of them trying out our new courts & considering joining in the fun of Thursday tennis.  Plenty of court time was followed by awards & a sumptuous morning tea.  Thanks to all Members who took part. See you on the Courts…
