BOWLS NEWS

MEN’S BOWLS

37 bowlers took part in the Thursday peg-draw with visitors once again amongst the winners. Wally Dawson and Roger Badains from Busselton were assisted by our own Butch Sharpe in winning the meat while Lindsay Blyth, also of Busselton, helped Alan Legge, as runners-up. A visitor from Melville, Bill Pallot, assisted “57 varieties” in taking away the Mars bar.

Only 6 bowlers of mixed gender took part in the Saturday peg-draw despite a beautiful winter’s day. (Maybe many were resting to get their legs in trim for the wonderful Rock ‘n’ Roll concert the next day!). Rob Prentice and the new lady on the block, Karen Lewis, were top bowlers and recovered their green fees.

Kevin Gibb attended the SWBL AGM on Monday and reported that the presence of Dunsborough with observer status was well received and that the likelihood of us entering a 3rd team in the SWBL next season looks a go-er.

Merv Mott was our delegate at the LL AGM, also on Monday, and it looks as if there will again be a single division in the Men’s Pennants competition next season, with the possibility of a return to two divisions the year after, and the creation of a promotion/relegation system (as in English soccer) the year after. Our motion, that the affiliation fee for the LL be based upon the number of Pennant sides a club enters rather than a club’s membership numbers, was defeated. Each member will contribute $7.50 next season to the LL, the same as last year. The $7.50, like each member’s more substantial contribution to BWA, will be included in the single $180 Bowling Section fee for next season.

Those that have not yet done so are requested to attach their names to their lockers in the men’s changing room so that we can ascertain free lockers for those on a waiting list of bowlers that have requested one.

If you are willing to play the occasional game of Pennants next year as a substitute, please enter your name ASAP on the list attached to the noticeboard, so that we can be sure of how many sides to enter into Tuesday and Saturday pennants competitions next season

MIXED TUESDAY SOCIAL BOWLS

We set a record everyone.  31 people for our fun day.  Good on ya.

Thanks for everyone to make it happen.  Norm Gage again did very well in all his 3 games to be the first into the final, followed by Rob Prentice, Sue Chester and Judy Henderson.  In the finals though Rob showed his best form to take out first place and nail the big prize.  Hope to see you all again next Tuesday.

LEAGUE CLUB CHALLENGE

Last Saturday May 5th, all clubs played at Cowaramup and again it was a perfect day for bowls.  It did not cloud over until mid-way through our last game when the temperature dropped dramatically and jackets came out but it was still a good day for bowls.

We had been informed by Lyn Colmer that she had made an error on the first day with her results.   Augusta was missing three points!  So they stood on 14 for the second week’s games.

What an exciting Saturday it turned out to be!  Both Augusta and Cowaramup went to three tie breakers, we went to two and Margs had two also.

Our first game was against Augusta, one set apiece, tie breaker.  Our lead put one just right on the jack, and we were happy with that.  Happy until the Augusta lead, Mem Evans, trickled into place and just moved our bowl out.  Her bowls stayed and Augusta won the tie and got four points.

They just won the tie breaker against Cowaramup with one shot as well and two against Margs.  So they ended the day with 12 points.  How easy it would have been just for three points.  That is what Cowaramup received. Three points after three tie breakers.  They lost every one of them by one shot!

They had us on our tie breaker!  They were holding three shots.  Then Merv Mott came in and destroyed them!!  One shot gave us that four points.  Again how easy it would have been just to get one point.

We won both sets against Margs and got five points.  They won and lost their tie breakers.

At the end of the day Augusta got their 12 to take them to 26 on the ladder.  We got another 10 to take us to 20 and in second place.  Cowaramup are third on eight points and Margs hold 6 points.

We travel to Margaret River for our third match with our intent on “taking on Augusta”!  Merv cannot make the next two weeks and we have Ian Creagh and Dennis Frost to replace him. Our team has melded well and support each other with high fives and lots of loud, yes loud, cheering!

TENNIS NEWS

Dunsborough Tennis nominated four teams, two Men’s teams and two Ladies’ teams, for the Bunbury Teams Carnival which was played at the Bunbury Tennis Club over the weekend – Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 May.  This was in increase of another two teams from last year and indicates the popularity and standard of Dunsborough Tennis.  The standard at this tournament always provides a challenge and this year was no different.  Additionally, the windy weather on Sunday and the unusual bounce of the grass courts provided additional challenges for all!  This tournament also provides the opportunity to watch a very high standard of tennis from the top players both in the region and from Perth.  The photo shows some of the participants in the tournament.

Next Saturday 12 May is the Official Opening of the new courts and also the Annual Ye Olde Cowbell Tournament which will be run by Greg Banfield from 1.00 pm.  We look forward to seeing all of our members on the courts to enjoy the spirit of this fun event.
